Bonding/White Fillings
Bonding or White Fillings are actually called Resin Bonded Composite (RBC) restorations and can be used to restore either front or back teeth. They bond to the enamel and the underlying dentin to help "restore" the strength of a decayed or broken tooth. RBC restorations are now the "standard of care" in most modern dental practices. They are indicated when less than 50% of the tooth structure is missing and there is no sign of a crack or fracture in the tooth. When done properly, they will provide a natural appearance as well as many years of service.
Dr. Stanley's Procedure
1. Removal of all decay and/or any weakened tooth structure.
2. Treatment of the enamel and dentin to provide a clean bonding surface.
3. Placement of an antimicrobial solution to kill any remaining bacteria.
4. Treatment with a tooth desensitizing agent on the dentin surface.
5. Apply and "light cure" the bonding agent to tooth surfaces.
6. Apply RBC and "light cure" each layer until the tooth is restored to a normal shape and appearance.
7. Contour the restoration, adjust the "biting surface" and polish the restoration to an enamel like appearance.
Advantages: Natural appearance, additional strength, and no potential for mercury leakage over time. You can chew on RBCs as soon as the anesthetic has worn off.
